Aida ha la Sindrome di Rett, un mostro che giorno dopo giorno ti impedisce di camminare, di respirare e mangiare normalmente, costringe le tue mani a sbattere l’una contro l’altra fino a sanguinare, ti rende incapace di comunicare in qualsiasi modo se non con urla di gioia o di dolore. La Rett ti imprigiona in un corpo che non risponde. Vorresti correre ad abbracciare tua madre, prendere del pane dalla tavola, afferrare la palla con cui gioca tua sorella, ma non ci riesci. Vorresti mettere la mano sulla guancia per dire che ti fa male il dente, ma non puoi… non puoi neanche piangere quando sei disperato, raramente ci riesci. Eppure… nonostante tutto… Aida vive e sorride e cerca di baciarti. I suoi occhi trasmettono tutta la sua forza, il suo infinito desiderio di vivere, la gioia di essere amata. E noi? Noi lottiamo e speriamo e raccogliamo fondi perché una cura possibile c’è. Quattro persone l’hanno già ricevuta e se da sperimentale dovesse, speriamo al più presto, diventare un farmaco accessibile si malati di Rett, Aida potrebbe finalmente correre, mangiare e urlare al mondo che vivere nonostante tutto è un dono meraviglioso! La speranza è un dolore che non si arrende. Aiutateci a sperare.

Aida has Rett syndrome, a monster that day after day prevents you from walking, breathing, and eating normally, forces your hands to bang together until you bleed, makes you unable to communicate in any way other than screams of joy or pain. Rett imprisons you in an unresponsive body. You want to run and hug your mother, take some bread from the table, grab the ball your sister plays with, but you can’t. You want to put your hands on your cheek to say that your tooth hurts, but you can’t. You can’t even cry when you’re desperate. And yet, despite everything, Aida lives and smiles and tries to kiss you. Her eyes convey all her strength, her infinite desire to live, the joy of being loved. And us? We fight and hope and raise funds for the research for the possibility of a cure. Four Rett syndrome patients have already received a dose of gene therapy in clinical trials. We hope this becomes a viable and accessible treatment for all who suffer with Rett. Perhaps Aida could finally run, eat, and shout to the world that living is a wonderful gift!
