Our family will never forget July 3rd, 2018 and while many were excited to celebrate our nation’s freedom, we were devastated learning our Ophelia would lose hers. This was the day she was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome. Over the last 4 years we have learned from the thief we have intimately come to know as Rett. We have watched it steal her voice, her mobility, her independence, and her childhood. The weight of knowing that Rett will continue to possess her first kiss, her first goal in a soccer game, her seat on high school student council, her camping trips, her college application, her opportunity to be a mother and eventually her life— is too much to bear.
Every night as we lay Ophelia down to sleep, we promise her we won’t stop fighting until there is a cure. Every night as we lay down to sleep, we hope that she gets the opportunity to wake up tomorrow and see us fight for her. Thanks to RSRT, there is hope in our promise and multiple curative strategies being researched and developed. Clinical trials on gene therapy are so close we can almost reach out and grab hold. We ask that you help our family fight for Ophelia’s future and for the future of nearly 350,000 individuals held captive by Rett Syndrome.
