My best friend’s daughter Allegra, is 10 years old, lives in Singapore and suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Rett syndrome. Our 3 children Amelia (11 yrs), Athena (10 yrs) and George (7 yrs) are going to climb Mt. Rinjani, Lombok from 30 – 31 December, 2023 to help raise funds for Allegra and research into a cure for Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome is a cruel and debilitating disease that is caused by a mutated gene on the X chromosome. There is no treatment, and no cure. Rett syndrome is a serious lifelong neurological disorder that is caused by random mutations in a gene called MECP2. It affects 1 in 10,000 females (and is even more rare in males) and begins to display itself in missed milestones or regression at 6-18 months.

Rett syndrome leads to severe impairments, affecting nearly every aspect of life: ability to speak, walk, eat and breathe easily. The hallmark of Rett syndrome is near constant repetitive hand movements while awake. Cognitive assessment in children with Rett syndrome is complicated, but we know that they understand far more than they can communicate to us, evidenced by their bright and attentive eyes, and their ability to express a wide spectrum of moods and emotions.

Despite the debilitating nature of the disorder, these children are so much more than a laundry list of symptoms. Their beauty and their strength inspire and motivate us. Numerous trials are underway to produce treatments for Rett. Many believe that advances in gene therapy could lead to a cure. Rett syndrome stands apart from other neurological disorders due to the dramatic reversibility of symptoms in animal models.

There is hope! Now what we want more than anything is to be able to turn that hope into reality, through the funding of ground-breaking research. Your generous donations will be going to the Rett Syndrome Research Trust, a not-for-profit organisation aimed at achieving one goal: a cure.

Your support may well change Allegra’s life and the lives of thousands of others around the world.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,

The Hoyes-Cock Family xx
