In late March after a long year of evaluations, testing, and interventions our youngest daughter Quinn (19 months) was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome—a devastating neurological disorder that affects 350,000 girls worldwide. Her diagnosis was far more severe than we ever imagined and it turned our life upside down.
We have grieved a lot these past few months—as a parent it is an unimaginable pain to know your child will face challenges so great she will not be able to build a life of her own, may have a significantly shortened lifespan, and may suffer greatly at times. Quinn is an amazing little girl who understands us, wants to communicate, is aware of the world around her, and has the sweetest personality, yet is trapped because she cannot control the movements of her body well enough to walk, talk, eat, or use her hands in a purposeful way. Quinn lights up when we talk to her, loves to giggle, and she expresses more love through her eyes than we ever thought possible. We just want to know her more.
Advances in gene therapy may give us that opportunity. There is a lot of optimism in the medical community that Rett will be reversible within her lifetime. We would give anything to give our daughter back her life and not let her be defined by this disorder, but it can’t be done alone. We are sharing a very private situation publicly with the hope that our community of friends, family, colleagues, and more will support Quinn through RSRT, which is helping drive forward treatments and cures for Rett.
