Our son, Owen, was born with a neurological disorder called MECP2 Duplication Syndrome. It impacts all aspects of our lives- he is unable to walk, unable to talk, and has many complex medical issues. Most individuals that have MECP2 DS have seizures that are resistant to medications, mobility issues due to low muscle tone, intellectual disabilities, immune deficiencies, challenges with feeding, communication, and other complex health issues.
MECP2 DS is a cruel and progressive disease. Owen’s world is one where each day could be our last good day. At 13 months of age, Owen was hospitalized in the ICU and almost died from a common cold. Since then, we have lived with the fear of losing Owen every day for the last 3 years. It is a horrible reality that he will face for the rest of his life.
Owen has seen more doctors, spent more time in hospital, had more tests, more illnesses, and more hours of therapy than most. He has to work twice as hard to do the things that most people take for granted. Despite all this, he is extremely determined, and does all of this with more grace than most adults could muster. He is loved by so many- he is such a beautiful, loving, and sweet person. When he smiles, it is with pure joy and his laugh is contagious. We are extremely proud and lucky to be Owen’s parents.
We are usually very private people, but we are putting this out into the world because tangible hope exists for Owen, and for others like him.
We’re asking you- our friends, family, and community to open your hearts and donate to give Owen, and other children just like him, the HOPE that they deserve. Hope for a long, happy, and healthy life. Hope that they will be able to run, play, and make friends. Hope for A CURE.
100% of all funds raised from this campaign will go directly towards research looking for a cure for MECP2 Duplication Syndrome. We have brilliant researchers in the U.S. and in Canada working RIGHT NOW towards clinical trials, and a REAL CURE in the very near future… IF the funds to conduct the research can be raised.
