Welcome to the 4th McDoubles Charity Tournament. This year we have lofty fundraising goals, and are expanding the tournament to include men’s and women’s singles brackets, and further opportunities to learn and give via our offsite evening celebration & fundraiser – we’re happy you’ve found your way here!
2023 was a groundbreaking year for the Rett Syndrome community. There are now TWO gene therapy clinical trials underway and numerous pharmaceutical companies involved in Rett syndrome research, all of them facilitated by our benefitting non-profit, the Rett Syndrome Research Trust. This gives us so much hope for the future of 350,000 girls and women worldwide.
As Rett syndrome is progressive, Evie Lotz has faced new challenges, losses and medical issues this year. She’s lost most of her hand use, all of her words and the curve in her spine is now being closely monitored. However, she has overcome many obstacles that we never thought would be possible. At only 3 years old, she’s excelled at learning how to use her eye gaze device for video games, and will soon be learning how to transfer those skills to a computer assisted vocabulary device this upcoming year. This fall she was happily integrated into a very forward-thinking preschool where she flourishes daily with children her own age. It’s an indescribable joy watching her clapping along as they sing in circle time and lighting up when it’s her turn to hit an adaptive toy button; for her and her family it’s a continual learning journey how to navigate a world set up for walkers, talkers and hand users.
Much work lies ahead to continue RSRT’s momentum towards a cure. Our hope is that one day we may have a conversation with Evie, watch her pick up her favorite food (pizza, of course!), and maybe even go for a run together on the Ambleside seawall. Until then, help the other 349,999 girls in addition to those who haven’t even been born yet. RSRT relies entirely on donations, and your financial generosity is used with the utmost integrity and efficiency. Notably, 94% of funding is spent on their research program which we will continue to support while we watch in awe as Evie navigates this world with such incredible resilience and determination.
