At 22 months, our dear Maya was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a rare, progressive neurological disorder that largely affects girls (and even more rarely, boys). Living with Rett is like having symptoms of cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy, and Parkinson’s. For many girls, breathing, eating, and sleeping can become difficult, while walking, talking, and purposeful use of their hands may be impossible. Many Rett families live by the motto of “taking day by day”, as you never know what the day – or hour – will bring.
Despite her difficulties, Maya continues to love her books, animals, FaceTime chats (watch out: she loves to give smooches through the screen), and stroller walks in the park. Though she is nonverbal, she is incredibly social and expressive with her eyes. Maya works hard in physical, occupational, behavioral, and speech/language therapies in order to strengthen her body and mind. We see the look of fierce determination on her face and know that she, in her own way, is fighting back against Rett and the basic skills it might deny her. Just recently she started to take some steps while walking and holding onto our hands – this gives her, and us, much joy.
We were devastated to learn of her diagnosis, but we are also hopeful. Rett Syndrome has been shown in a laboratory model to be reversible. Gene therapy holds the promise of a complete cure and, in the meantime, numerous clinical trials are underway with treatments that will allow girls with Rett to be more functional. There is optimism in the medical world that Rett will be reversible and available within just a few years! These advancements in research continue because of the generous donations made by yourself and others. Fundraising is the necessary foundation to help cure Maya and the 350,000 others living with Rett Syndrome.
